Ghost Bee Egg *Sneak Peek*

Poncho Peligroso is a pal. Not only is he a pal, he’s a gentleman and a scholar. He’s also a poet, the Poet Laureate of 2011 to be precise. “Ghost Bee Egg” will be his first release since he toured the upper East Coast this summer on the magical poetry tour. Some people claimed the poetry tour didn’t cover the entire East Coast, that it missed Florida. To that accusation was the reply: Florida sucks bro. Indeed Florida is where American pop culture released its bowels to create Disneyworld, the happiest piece of excrement on Earth.

Pop is part of Poncho’s poetry. Words wiggle their way in, our grand American culture reflected in words like ‘swag’, ‘fuckstallion’, ‘bitchingest’ and ‘war’, ‘war’ being a particular popular one in the United States lately. Though fuckstallion and bitchingest may not be real words they leave the impression you’ve just read a real word. When I read them I said them aloud to become cooler for a brief moment in time. “Ghost Bee Egg” shows the eager reader what Poncho has been up to lately. My first encounter with Poncho had to do with his 2011 Poet Laureate title. Since then I’ve become more familiar with his work, his methods, even Poncho as a person. We’ve met. Reading Poncho is one thing, experiencing his gigantic style in person is quite another. Glad we’re not mere internet bros, we’re IRL bros who will probably never meet in person again.

“Ghost Bee Egg” feels more personal than anything I’ve read of Poncho’s. I am a bit overwhelmed by it. This is simply the first complete draft. Reading it I’m given the sense Poncho is opening up. Before there appeared to be more distance between the reader and the writer. Poncho wants to eliminate the distance. Poncho wants to come up to you, to tell you a little about his life, and to give you a hug. Yeah, I’m aware his last collection of his work was entitled “the romantic” but this has a more intimate mood.

You may be familiar with some of this, like the ‘bee poems’ first found on ‘allwritethen’. Others show a new direction, a bit more of a reporting style. What I see here is a mention of Poncho’s meeting with the muses of online Philosophers, the Philolzophy girls, a mysterious duo of Minnesota based philosophy bloggers. A loving tribute is given as well to that Twitter life force “Horse_Ebooks”. Besides that I can detect fragrances of affection for others, frustration, and the worry about being an “Ugly American” overseas. As I’m a sloth who has traveled to nearly every continent I do not worry about this, though when I first started travelling I worried a lot about this particular problem. In this book Poncho meshes his emotions with pop culture with great success.

In “Ghost Bee Egg” Poncho hones the perfection of his affection. Get affected.
