My Cat Is An Alien - Living on the Invisible Line LP 7.0

My Cat is an Alien teases loops out. It is a simple process yet very effective. Over the course of these four songs you’re constantly trying to figure out exactly what’s happening. In some instances it nearly makes sense. Others it appears to be in stasis, unwilling to move past its current groove. No matter what the approach it is always successful.

The mood is what draws together these four otherwise unrelated and untitled pieces. A guitar is the only thing you can count on to remind you humans are behind this deeply eerie music. I’m often reminded of pieces of sound being transmitted from far away, from a radio station long since gone. Distortions, noises, and other small oddities are thrown together to create this queasy sound.

Surprises do lurk around every apparently stable transmission. In the first track things descend into utter anarchy by the end, with the guitar barely scrapping by against all the madness. Other tracks are a bit more subtle and quiet in their approach. Track 3 may have some of the gentlest moments on the entire album, at least to me. For the finale ‘My Cat is an Alien’ creates a rather tense atmosphere. By the very end of the track things have calmed down, leading to a ‘cool down’ or ‘make nice’ period.

“Living on the Invisible Line” reveals itself with extraordinary slowness. The intensity and slow progression of the songs makes it require repeated listens. Even with multiple listens there remains those aspects beyond our perception.
