Ullbasunen is a group of computers talking to each other. Clearly the computers are extremely happy and Scandinavian (hence the unreasonable amount of consonants). I consider this chipwave, or chiptune, or whatever you want to call these sounds. My preference would be ‘happy sounds’. All four of these songs are positively infectious in their disarming charm. Think of the guy whose laugh makes everyone else laugh. Yep, that’s basically the entire EP’s temperament.
“Ta av dig hatten, det är en dam i rummet” reminds me strongly of Dat Politics. Considering how dear to my heart that French trio is, they’ve definitely pulled something of a coup. Everything on here is so basic, so simple, and so perky. When I hear this I imagine a couple of computers flirting with each other, exchanging devious information. Easily this is my favorite song on the entire album.
“Idioten” excels at using clipped sounds for maximum effect. Ullbasunen shortened even the hand claps, as if they were taking too long. “Bortapan” has the flavor of an early Bogdan track. Once again, simple sounds, silly execution make it something of a delight to hear. “Extra barbariskt vinternummer” has a dub feel to me, if dub reggae got hold of advanced 80s computer technology.
What a blast “Idiotaphattbarbarskivan” is. I now know how cheery computers can get once the right people get behind them. Ullbasunen are the right band. Glad I got to discover what computers sound like when they are flirting.
