Edward Appleby – Music for the Living Dead 7.0

“Music for the Living Dead” is one of the more tasteful approaches to Halloween. Normally Halloween music has a tendency to be a little tacky, metal-based, or otherwise not appropriate for any other part of the year. I’m not sure why so much Halloween music suffers from that fate. Edward Appleby’s little selection comes across as a tasteful rendition of Halloween, celebratory, a little silly, but quite enjoyable.

We begin with an organ. The organ pumps along reminiscent of “Little Miss Sunshine’s” opening song. It is quite an introduction. Edward Appleby begins singing and sounds charming during the violin break. Only then do we learn it’s Halloween and we better celebrate, with all the ghosts and ghouls.

The next two songs are instrumentals, building the mood. “What do you want from me, blood?” I figure could be a great name for an ironic death metal band. I’m a bit disappointed nobody’s used it before. Growing steadily it segues into “Spooky! Scary!” quite well.

Ending the little EP is “The City (of the Living Dead)” which has the largest amount of electronic effects. It is also the longest song track on here at almost seven minutes long. Towards the end of the track it becomes nearly hypnotic with its sheer repetition.

Overall this is a good EP for Halloween. Even outside of that holiday, it is still perfectly fine. The mention of Halloween is somewhat limited for a more horror-based language. And it’s a good thing.
