Hot Sugar - Last Christmas Review (Christmas Edition)

George Michael may be the Johann Sebastian Bach of our generation. ‘Last Christmas’ is his crowning achievement.    There are countless bands paying tribute to George Michael’s creation. Only a select few meet the high requirements of timelessness. I’m happy to report someone has finally met, perhaps exceeded, those standards. In fact, this may be the definition of Kawaii. Cute doesn’t do it justice. Mere words grasp at the meaning of this video. Ironic may be one of those words. Brilliance may be another.

Molly Soda is the punk Astrud Gilberto. She sings her heart out with as little emotion as possible. It brings me to tears to watch this, yet I do over and over again, trying to understand what happened. I am trying to understand who can complete Molly’s perfect pink world. I think what happened was last Christmas, she gave someone her heart, but the very next day, that person gave it away, in an act of true callousness. This year, if I understand correctly, to save her from tears, she’s going to give it to someone special, special.

Wham’s classic video has nothing on this genius, rivaling ‘Apocalypse Now’ in terms of cinematography. Flying pigs come on screen, trying to cheer her up. The rain is made up of pink, delicious food. Even the heart UFOs can’t help her recover from heartbreak, nor can a rat that comes in out of view. Perhaps the rat is representative of the terrible man who foolishly gave away her heart. Or maybe the man with a knife is representative, being an actual man with an actual knife. Violence is only hinted at; we will never know the true suffering Molly has been through. A synthesizer solo at the end is the closest we get to the artist’s tortured soul. And the beats hit so hard, expressing the pain she’s going through as she searches for the perfect mate.

YouTube commenters are moved by this stunning clip. “IReallyAmIronMan” emphatically states ‘I find this extremely hard to masturbate to’ expressing his desire to cheer up Molly by being a total creep. A few others express interest in mending her heart, such as “TheSaladFace” who politely says: ‘Regardless of her shit voice, I probably would still fuck her.’ Considering the exquisite beauty of “TheSaladFace” a legend among YouTube commenters who could pick anyone due to his charm and grace, this is truly remarkable. “xxocupcake1” believes it to be ‘Kawaii to the maxx’. One potential talent agent, “nutsriceandred” writes ‘Is this a sketch for Tim and Eric or what.....’ which it is. A Pitchfork writer “JohnnyKevlarSDA” expresses disappointment at the release date, saying ‘Damn, this song was released too late to make pitchfork’s top 100 tracks of 2011 list.’

I adore this track. Thanks to Molly Soda, Christmas came a little early this year.
