Spencer
Madsen is a bro I’m proud to call bro. His twitter feed is good enough to write
a book about, or rather, another book about. Slowly but surely his internet
presence has spread out, from a mere twitter, to a published writer, to an
OKCupid member. Spencer Madsen is what the ladies call ‘a grower and
not a shower’.
Over
the past month Spencer has shot into the literary sky like a blue million
miles. His poem about love has a picture of a cat on it or a stuffed animal, it
is hard to tell. The poem is tender, loving, and makes me a little tearful.
Without writing names for either one, Spencer creates a sense of knowing them.
The
poem ‘Sand Mouth’ remembers the awful snow from Halloween. Remember that? That
sucked. Most of ‘Sand Mouth’ deals with an opaque relationship. I like the
beginning of this poem a lot. It reminds me of anxiety, something I get quite
often, since I get anxious, not sad. People tell me not to get anxious about
something, but that only increases the sense of anxiety I have, then eventually
it either goes away or it overwhelms me. Usually it overwhelms me for a brief
period of time.
‘like headphones plugged into nothing’ is
great. It reminds me of the time I met a friend of mine. I was wearing a Slint
T-shirt. As I walked with him and his girlfriend, she mentioned a habit he had
developed. He would ride the subway wearing headphones. The headphones would
enter his pocket. In his pocket was nothing. He just wanted to wear the
headphones to look cool. I asked if he listened to Lint. Oddly, this story
brings up memories of that experience, traveling with both of them, watching
their interactions together.
Groovesharkis an abridged version of Spencer’s life. In it we see his ex-girlfriend, who
wants to see him. He goes over the things that he thought would make him happy:
transferring to a New York based school (Hunter College) and living in the
hippest part of New York (Brooklyn). From there he talks about the angst of the
professor lifestyle, a pain I know all too well. Plus, he mentions how he is
closer friends with people he has never met than people in real life. When I read
this, I involuntarily nodded. I meet so many wonderful people on the internet,
people who help me to become a better sloth, a better person. Internet people
make me feel happy. Spencer is one of those people.
‘A Hum’
is one of Spencer’s longer pieces. It describes a single moment as if inside a
dream. Spencer is pitted against imaginary versions of himself. Since these are
her dreams, and not his, we can never know which Spencer came out victorious:
the real or the imaginary.
Today
is Spencer Madsen’s day though. No other day can compete. For today, December
21st, in the year 2011 of our lord, Spencer’s tweets made an
appearance. Not on just his Tumblr, nope, these are on Muumuu House, edited by Eliane Sun. Muumuu
House likes Spencer enough to host his tweets there, where they will stay for
time immemorial. Spencer’s twitter feed is one of the best on twitter. Many
twitter feeds suck; they usually serve as a way to describe one’s food intake
for the day. Well, Spencer uses Tumblr for queries about his diet. Glad to see
he uses Goodreads to find hot, single women in his area. My favorite tweet from
this twitter compilation “babies cry because they are alive and that is the
saddest thing to be”. It is perfect.
As the
final touch on Spencer’s illustrious career is the ‘hater’ boon. One hater
accuses Spencer of stealing James Frey’s title ‘A Million Little Pieces’
because clearly someone who wants Frey’s work may easily replace little pieces
with bears. This hater, from High School, feels the need to bully Spencer
online. Whoever the hater is clearly spends his or her time googling Spencer
Madsen on the internet and writing grammatically incorrect screeds against him.
A greater amount of haters indicates Spencer’s popularity. You can see all the
comments on this several months’ old post by Teagues.
Spencer
Madsen is too lit to quit.

too lit to quit..........really love that line.
ReplyDeleteSpencer is a great man. If you are ever fortunate to meet him, you'll see words coming out of his pores. It is a bit odd but mostly totally awesome.
