Beach House – Bloom

Beach House, I love them. No two ways about it. Any band that incorporates at least one half of my name is alright with me. Sloths love Beach house. Beach House's music tends to move about as quickly as the average sloth. Humans make such fast music. Sometimes it is important to slow down, take a breather, relax, and be one with the ground.

Where was I when I first heard Beach House? I remember it well. There I was sitting in my room, going through one of my massive batches of music, seeing what I dug. Beach House came on, their first self-titled album. I stopped whatever I was doing and felt the power of Victoria Legrand’s voice, and some guy doing quiet guitar stuff in the background. She sounded perfect. The guy seemed alright.

2008 offered Beach House a larger venue, specifically the Siren Music Festival in Coney Island. I was there. That picture of them for their Wikipedia page, yeah I took it. All of my friends were there. We talked about vegan-ism, the shitty band Jaguar Love, and vague sexual innuendo.

I remember telling people in 2009 how Real Estate and Beach House would become really big. They didn’t believe me. While they argued with me I thought about blogging about it years later after I had been proven right. I worried that perhaps people wouldn’t get Beach House’s slow, simple sound. Most of 2009 was spent trying to find converts to the Beach House religion.

“Teen Dream” came out in 2010. That was one of my favorites of the year. I didn’t have to convince people anymore of their greatness. Reviews were glowing, glistening, powerfully bright. Their success as a buzzband was assured.

Not sure what their new album ‘Bloom’ out May 15th on Sub Pop is going to prove. I feel they proved about as much as they could with their last album. Can this one outdo the last? This may be a serious problem. Each new album is better than the last. How can they beat their last record? Or is this an impossible task?

  1. i don't find it has as many hooks as teen dream, but it still is worth listening to a few times over. it's more ephemeral like devotion. ah- idk. teen dream had about 8 tracks i loved. i love maybe 4 on here. i'll sink more in on my commute tomorrow.

    1. I like the song 'On the Sea' the most. That's my favorite right now.
