Dream Sick is habit forming. Think I’m pretty happy with the quality. I’m reminded of
the best of Modest Mouse. Some of these songs embody all those things I miss
about old Modest Mouse: the rant-like lyrics, the sudden emotional bursts. It
is something to get lost in, enjoy the cymbal crashes, guitar squalls and other
delightful hallmarks of a band that has its act together.
I like the
extremely energetic pieces. “Shine on Shine” demonstrates this perfectly. The
shouted chorus really wins me over. How they manage to shove so much energy
into one piece confounds me. Going through the rest of the songs I get a
similar raw sound. It is lo-fi but not too lo-fi. There’s a balance between the
smooth and the jagged edges. “Know Your Heart” is another crazed track, which
bursts at the seams. Dream Sick do a good job of mixing these explosions with
the calmer moments. It is a reflective sort of album, playing out like
thoughts.
My
favorite song on the entire album is the urgent “Who You Are”. I got up on my
feet and started dancing to it. There is so much energy on this one. I can’t
believe they picked such a ferocious track to end the album. But it is pretty
much the best thing on the entire thing, and I even bob my head back and forth
with all the crash and smashing going on at the very end.
Something
is in the water in Arizona. Lately I keep on seeing a lot of old-school, high
quality indie rock blasting out of that hot desert of a state. Glad Dream Sick
is one of those great bands.
