An Evening with Dusty by Kyle Bobby Dunn

Kyle Bobby Dunn is a quietly busy man. Most of his songs linger around the softer reams of the audio spectrum. This means you either need to turn up the volume or actually listen. For Kyle’s work is the art of listening. It is near silence with very gradual, deliberate movements.

‘An Evening with Dusty’ is an old piece made new. The piece itself is from Christmas Eve 2004 yet recorded recently at Bunce Cake (a very good venue). I think this is a perfect song for this time of the year. Right now I am in the middle of winter. Valentine’s Day is only a few days away. What better song than this one for the mixed emotions I feel during this time of year.

It is a tender piece. The sound seems to ebb and flow slowly. When I listen to this I begin to relax. I notice things I don’t usually notice. My breathing is controlled. I can hear everything around me slowly fade out as I begin to pay attention to the small details. I think there is a certain Eliane Radigue influence to what Kyle does, though Kyle’s approach tends to be slightly less somber.

Winter is not my favorite season. I suffer from seasonal depression. Looking outside and seeing the day die early makes me feel sad. Hearing new work from Kyle though, an artist who has been toiling away for quite some time on his craft, well that cheers me right up.

Out of kindness the entire recording can be found here. Generally Kyle stays in the New York area. If you’re lucky enough to live there try to see him.
