RxGibbs
is smooth. I mean really smooth. ‘Futures EP’ is the kind of smooth that’s so
smooth I’m getting jealous. While it doesn’t surprise me something this sweet
came from that pop confection master Cascine, I’m still pretty happy.
‘Futures
EP’ is a bit different though than the average Cascine release for its devotion
to the low end. At times RxGibbs seems to literally float along on the low end.
Each time I put this on I need to put on my bass-heavy headphones and crank up
the volume, just a little bit. ‘In Orbit’ rewards this behavior in spades, with
such a strong, simple bass. Then there are those far away vocals, like a siren’s
call, just pulling me into the sea of Pacific sound.
The
whole thing reminds me of the best of early Warp Records, before they went down
the inhuman electronic music rabbit whole. Yes, there is quite a bit of
humanity here, even a little heart. While the lyrics are generally indecipherable
it feels a bit warmer as a result. Every track has them adding to the already
lush sound.
Everything
here is simple. RxGibbs appears to use the ‘sum of its parts’ approach to
music. Beats are simple. The melodies are straightforward. When you bring all
these basic elements together however you get perfect cruising music. Listening
to this music reminds me of summer with my sunglasses on. It’s such a positive,
sunny EP.
